The boo-birds were out in full force at Riverfront Coliseum as the
Stingers were humiliated by the Winnipeg Jets. Stingers head coach Jacques Demers stated
"We're making too many mistakes. We're supposed to know, what we're doing out there,
but it seems like some of the players are waiting for the other guy to do the job."
The club hung in there through the first two periods, but fell apart in the final period.
Dennis Sobchuk scored the first goal of
the game at 6:45 in the first period. when he batted in a rebound from teammate Blaine
Stoughton. Robbie Frorek won a face-off in the Winnipeg end to start the scoring play. But
Winnipeg answered shortly after when Ulf Nilsson got the puck from teammate Bobby Hull
right in front of goalie Ernie Wakely. The goal came after many missed passes and checks
by both clubs. The Jets scored again when Lyle Moffat his teammate Peter Sullivan won a
face-off in the Stingers end. Moffat took a pass from Sullivan and blasted it past Ernie
Wakely for the score. Despite the Stingers hanging tough with the Jets for most of the
opening period, even managing to kill a Sobchuk roughing penalty, the team only managed
one goal..
The Jets added to their lead at 15:10
in the second period when Ulf Nilsson scored. He took the puck from behind the Stingers
net and slipped a shot through Wakely's pads as the Stinger goalie went down in an attempt
to make the stop. The Stingers actually had control of the puck but lost it before
crossing the blue line.
In the third everything went to hell
for the Stingers. The Jets Lyle Moffat scored his second goal of the game at 4:25 when the
Stingers players were caught out of position in their own zone before Lyle scored the
goal. The Jets would score back-to-back short handed goals in less then one minute when
Anders Hedberg scored at 11:43 and Bob Guindon scored at 12:27.
"I am fully aware of what's going
on out there," Demers stated. "I know who isn't working. Maybe somebody has to
wake up some morning in another jersey to get things going. It's happened before." |
