The Stingers playing their third game in three nights started off quite
sluggish and the Jets were able to capitalize on it early in the game. Bobby Hull scored
the first goal at 6:37 when he deflected a shot by teammate Lars Erick Sjoberg. The puck
slid right by rookie Stinger goaltender Mike Liut. But the Stingers answered shortly after
when team captain Rick Dudley took the puck from teammate Rob Ftorek. Ftorek pulled Jets
goalie Mattson out of position before feeding the puck to Dudley. Dudley shot into nearly
an open net for the score.

Winnipeg took the lead back when
Kent Nilsson fed the puck to his teammate Dan Labraaten who proceeded to score from right
in front of the net. Despite the Stingers being down by one goal, the club actually held
tough. The Jets blasted off 16 shots on goal to the Stingers 4 shots on goal. And
Nilsson's goal came seconds before the end of the period.
Neither team scored during the middle
period despite Cincinnati having some good scoring opportunities. Dennis Sobchuk, rookie
defenseman Craig Norwich and winger Jamie Hislop all missed a nearly empty Jets net on a
couple of occasions. But the Stingers held tough and held the Jets scoreless in the final
period, while racking up two more goals for the Stinger win. Rich Leduc scored the first
goal of the period with a little help from Claude Larose and Blaine Stoughton. The same
combination of players scored the final goal of the game. This time the puck coming off
the stick of Blaine Stoughton. It would be Blaine Stoughtons first goal of the season.
The Stingers played controlled,
defensive hockey through most of the game to keep the powerful Jet offense at bay. The
Jets finished the game with a 37-24 edge in shots as Liut played another strong game. This
was the first win in four games this season against the mighty Winnipeg Jets. |
