For the fifth straight game, the Cincinnati Stingers scored first. The
games first goal came when Nordique Bob Fitchner was sent to the penalty box for hooking
thirty seconds into the first period. The call gave the Stingers the advantage and the
club chased in on the opportunity when Ron Plumb scored at 1:25 in the period. Plumb
drilled a shot from the point that sailed past Nordique goaltender Don McLeod. Plumb was
sent to the penalty box for interference shortly after his goal and the Nordiques were
able to tie the game up with a goal by Real Cloutier at 4:36. Cloutier took the puck from
teammate Marc Tardif and tucked it into the corner of the net for the score.
The Nordiques lost Fitchner to the
penalty box yet again but this time Dennis Sobchuk scored during the power play. Sobby
took a pass from new teammate Pat Stapleton and beat McLeod with a high shot from the
circle. Robbie Ftorek went on to score the third Stinger goal of the period at 13:06 when
he got a quick shot from right on top of the Quebec net. The puck slid through McLeod's
pads for the score. McLeod wound up on his back inside the goal when the play ended.
In the second period the Nordiques went
on a scoring frenzy that began with Paulin Bordeleau netting a goal on a deflection in
from of the Stingers net at 8:11. Cincinnati's Robbie Ftorek scored the only Stingers goal
of the period at 14:19. But the Nordiques tacked two more goals on the the score board to
knot the score up. Marc Tardif skated in on Dion at 16:05, decking the Stinger
goalie and then slipping a shot in the corner and through Dion's pads. The second Nordique
goal came when Bordeleau moved like a snake through the Stingers defense and then fooled
Dion from right in front of the net. The goal came one second before the end of the
period.
In the third period, the Nord's went
ahead for the first time in the game when Gary Lariviere fired from the point and Andre
Boudrias deflected the puck past Michel Dion. But the Stingers tied the game up at 9:30
when Rob Ftorek knocked in a power play deflection on a hard hit shot by teammate Dennis
Sobchuk. It would be Rob's third goal of the game. The Stingers held tough through the
rest of the period and the game went into overtime.
The Stingers' Dennis Abgrall scored the
game winner at 1:41 when he triggered a shot from the circle to beat Don McLeod. The win
would give the Stingers their first overtime victory of the season.
