| There will
be no hockey in Indianapolis tonight. The game between the Racers and the Cincinnati
Stingers was postponed for rather obvious reasons. A Stingers spokesman said the game has
been rescheduled for Monday (8 p.m.) at Market Square Arena. The game was to have been
televised on WXIX-TV tonight, but the station has another program scheduled for Monday
night and the game will not be televised. The Stingers are scheduled to host the Winnipeg
Jets at Riverfront Coliseum Sunday afternoon (3 p.m.). A decision on possible cancellation
of that contest will be made by the Stingers and World Hockey Association officials today,
but it would appear the game will be played if the Jets get into Cincinnati. Stingers coach Jacques Demers, snowed in like everyone else the past two
days, said he didn't feel the lack of practice would hurt the team. The Stingers have won
their last two games and gave the impression they were ready to play serious hockey.
"All the players called me and said they wanted to practice (Friday)," said
Demers. "I felt really good. It showed they wanted to go out and do their job. That's
the kind of attitude we need."
The Stingers have scheduled practice 1:30 p.m. today at Riverfront
Coliseum. Coliseum ice became available when the University of Cincinnati basketball game
was cancelled. The New England Whalers, trapped in Cincinnati since Wednesday night when
they played the Stingers, finally left on a charter flight Friday afternoon. They were
scheduled to play the Bulls in Birmingham Friday night. The Stingers game against the
Whalers, scheduled for Hartford Civic Center February 5, has been rescheduled to April 10
in Hartford following the collapse of the Civic Center Roof. The two-day layoff may be a
blessing in disguise for two of the Stingers. Center Richie Leduc has been bothered by a
groin pull and goalie Michel Dion has tendonitis in his hip. Two days of rest will
definitely benefit both players. |
