| The Nordiques got on the
board first with a goal by Paulin Bordeleau at 7:26 when he carried the puck into the
Stinger zone. He held off a check and blasted an angled wrist shot high enough to fool
Stinger goalie Norm LaPointe. The Stingers had trouble early in the contest, missing on
passes and fumbling when they tried to leave their own zone. But once they settled down
they started to pressure Quebec and finally scored at 11:35. Hugh Harris carried the puck
through center ice and slipped a pass into the Nordiques zone, leading Dennis Abgrall onto
Nordiques goalie Jim Crosi. Abgrall then faked and put a backhanded shot into the net. The play between both teams really picked up in the second period, seeing
three goals scored between both teams. The first came from Rich Leduc at 1:54 on a nice
play with Rick Dudley skating with the puck into the Quebec zone. He then passed to Peter
Marsh in the slot and took a shot. The puck was blocked but Leduc sweeped in and batted in
the rebound. One minute later the Nordiques tied the game up when Matti Magnan sent the
puck in front for Marc Tardiff to score as the Stingers were unable to clear the zone. The
Stinger scored again when Abgrall broke into the Nordique's zone, two-on-one with Hugh
Harris with Abgrall getting the puck in front. Abgrall faked Corsi with a forehand
and scored with a backhanded shot.
The Stingers continued to score in the second period when Brian
Coates let go with a hard angle shot from the left side. He surprised Nordiques goalkeeper
Corsi as the puck found the far corner of the net stick side. Despite the Stingers drawing
double minors, Cincinnati went ahead and scored anyway. Dudley intercepted a Nordiques
pass, got the puck to Leduc and the two skated into the Nordiques end. Leduc then fed
Dudley from right in front for the goal at 16:13.
In the third period the Nordiques scored when Warren Miller took a
rebound from a failed Gary Lariviere shot. Miller slipped it in the net from right
in front. But Cincinnati added an insurance goal when Jamie Hislop knocked one in the net
at 13:25.
