The Jets opened the first period with a goal literally seconds into the
game. Cincinnati won the opening face-off and retreated into their own end to form
the play, but Jets Nilsson grabbed the puck and fed Lars-Erik Sjoberg who drilled a shot
on the ice past rookie Stinger goalie Mile Liut. Winnipeg maintained pressure on the
Stingers through out most of the first period but the Stingers managed to ward the Jets
off.
Cincinnati finally answered in the
second period with a goal by Claude Larose at 4:55. Rookie Craig Norwich intercepted a
Jets pass and fed the puck to Larose. Larose then knocked in the puck with a high
backhanded shot for the score. Larose followed with another goal at 8:45 after team
captain Rick Dudley dug the puck off the boards behind the Winnipeg net and fed Larose who
scored from the near slot. But the Jest came back and scored just moments later to tie the
score back up. The Jets Peter Sullivan skated through the Cincinnati defense and went top
shelf to beat Liut at 8:59.
In the third period, Anders Hedberg
broke the tie when he took a pass from teammate Ulf Nilsson and scored from the slot. The
Jets seemed to be in control of the game from that point on, but with a minute left to
play Stinger head coach Jacques Demers pulled goalie Mike Liut for a sixth skater. Pat
Stapleton gave the puck to Ron Plumb who fired a shot from the point. Defeneman Barry
Melrose was planed right in front of the Jets net and deflected the puck past Gary Bromely
to send the game into their second consecutive overtime game. In overtime the Stingers
managed to get their victory when Rob Ftorek scored. Ftorek scored on a rebound of a shot
by teammate Jamie Hislop.
The Stingers victory came without
defenseman Gilles Marotte and winger Peter Marsh. Marotte was injured in the prior game
and Marsh was suspended by coach Jacques Demers in a disciplinary move after the forward
refused an order by Demers to leave the ice at Winnipeg while a junior team practiced.
