The Stingers put the Whalers to sleep in the first period, controlling the puck and playing a deliberate, defensive style of hockey. The Stingers were the first to get on the board at 2:43. The goal came when Rich Leduc who took a shot which missed and Peter Marsh back handed the rebound which missed also. Blaine Stoughton swept in and nabbed the puck to finally score the goal.

During the second period, the action picked up with a lot of forechecking and seeing both clubs score goals. The first came from Stinger Rich Leduc at 15:56. He and teammate Stoughton broke into the Whalers zone with a two-on-one advantage and when Whalers goalkeeper Al Smith committed himself to Stoughton, Blaine passed the puck to Leduc for an easy goal. The Whalers goal came at 17:15 as Gordie Howe dug the puck off the boards. The Hartford crowd cheered for Gordie, hoping to see the elder skatesman score his 1,000 career goal. But Gordie passed the puck to his teammate Mike Antonovich who was right in front, of the Stinger net. Goalie Michel Dion didn't have a chance.

In the third period the Stingers tacked on three straight insurance goals to help lead the club to a victory. Peter Marsh scored his first goal of the season at 5:39. The goal turned out to be the game winner. Rookie Bill Gilligan scored the next goal of the period at 9:29. Gilligan took a rebound from in front and flipped the puck over goalie Al Smith and into the net. It would be Gilligans first major league goal, coming in only his third major league game. Rich Leduc scored the final Stinger goal at 13:29 during a power play. The Whalers however did finally answer with a goal by Gordie Roberts at 16:12 but the goal was all for not, the Stingers held on to their lead for the win.
