The Stingers opened up the first period with Dennis Sobchuk being sent to
the penalty box for interference. The penalty set the Roadrunners up on a power play,
which resulted in a Phoenix goal by Del Hall. Cincinnati tied up the match with a goal by
Jacques Locas at 10:17 in the period. The shot came after a rebound while the Stingers
held a one man edge. Cincinnati went on to add a second goal at 17:20 when Blaine
Stoughton slapped a shot from the right circle past Roadrunners goalie Gary Kurt.

The Roadrunners goaltender Gary Kurt missed
the puck batted in by Stingers Blaine Stoughton in the first period. |
Less then two minutes into the
second period, Dennis Sobchuk took a pass from teammate Dennis Abgrall and slapped a shot
into the Roadrunners net from the circle. Peter Marsh scored his first goal in a Stingers
uniform when he hit the puck in from the slot on a pass from teammate Billy Steele. Peter
Marsh would strike again later in the period when he knocked another one past Roadrunners
goalie Kurt at 13:41.
The Roadrunners defenseman Jim Niekamp
was sent to the penalty box after a cross checking call, giving Cincinnati a 4 on 3
advantage. During the power play Ron Plumb passed the puck to Dennis Sobchuk in the left
circle and Sobby slipped it into the Roadrunners net to take a commanding 6-1 lead. But
the Roadrunners managed to score a goal one second before the middle period was conclude.
The goal came from Bob Liddington after he slapped a shot from inside the Stingers blue
line.
Shortly after the final period began,
Dennis Abgrall scored another Stingers goal. With teammate Claude Larose following a few
minutes later. Larose's goal came from a rebound right in front of the Roadrunners goal.
He then bounced the puck off of the back of Jim Niekamp of the Roadrunners for the score.
Jacques Locas would score the final Stingers goal at 9:00 in the period. His shot came
after Dave Inkpen tried to score but was rejected. Locas then took the rebound and batted
it in the Roadrunners net. The Roadrunners managed to slip a meaningless goal into the
Stingers net before the end of the game but it was far to late. The win would be the
Stingers third in a row.
Much of the credit for the victory
belonged to Dennis Sobchuk who had two goals and four assists in the game. His six points
was tied with Rick Dudley for the most points scored in a game. |
