The Stingers squared off against the last place Edmonton Oilers.
Cincinnati took control of the game from the start and despite Rick Dudley and Blaine
Stoughton being sent to the penalty box. The Oilers were unable to capitalize. Stoughton
was sent for holding while Stingers team captain Rick Dudley was sent to the box for
protesting the call against teammate Blaine Stoughton. Dudley received a 10 minute
misconduct from referee Peter Moffat. Later in the first period, the Stingers Pierre
Guite took a shot at the Oilers goal, but Edmonton's goalie Ken Broderick made a fabulous
save from the side of the net.
Moments later, former Cincinnati
Wing and Cincinnati Stinger Bryan Campbell slapped in a shot from right in front of
the net after receiving a pass from teammate Rick Sather. However, Cincinnati answered at
14:56 in the period when Dennis Sobchuk belted a shot from the left circle which caught
the corner of the net. It would be Sobby's tenth goal of the season.
Rick Dudley scored shortly after the
second period began. The goal came after the Oilers defenseman failed to move him out of
the slot which left Dudley alone. Rich Leduc made a good pass to Dudley and he slapped the
puck in for his tenth of the season. But shortly after Dudleys goal, the Oilers Doug
Barrie scored to tie the game back up. Barrie's goal came after a screen shot from the
point. Cincinnati almost took the lead again midway through the middle period on a
three-on0one breakaway. But the attempt came up empty as the Oilers defensman Al Hamilton
broke up the play in front of the crease.
In the third period, both teams had
good opportunities to take the lead but came up shy. Claude Larose and Rick Dudley took
several good shots, only to have them blocked by Broderick. The Oilers had an opportunity
slip by them after a collision with Stingers teammates Dennis Abgrall and Norm LaPointe
left Cincinnati's net opened. Abgrall was trying to clear the puck when the collision
accured. But the Oilers were unable to take advantage.
The Stingers finally capitalized after
the Oilers Al Hamilton was sent to the penalty box for tripping. The goal came from the
war-club of Claude Larose on a deflection of a shot by team captain (and fellow LSD LIner)
Rick Dudley. The goal would be Laroses twelth of the season. Blaine Stoughton was later
sent to the penalty box for tripping which set up the Oilers for a game tying goal. The
goal came at 13:26 with only seven seconds left on the Oilers power play. Stoughton was
sent to the penalty box again for tripping but the Oilers could not score due to some fine
goal tending by Norm LaPointe. Neither team was able to break the tie so the game went
into overtime.
In overtime the outcome of the game
woul dbe settled when former Stinger Bryan Campbell would sink the winning goal at 6:33.
Campbell scored from about 10 feet out following up on a rush by teammates Tim Sheehy and
Barry Wilkins. The loss caused the Stingers to slip back into second place within the
Eastern Division. It would be the Stingers second straight road loss and second loss in
three overtime games. |
