The game
against the Indianapolis Racers was advertised as "Guaranteed Beat Indy Night".
Dale Smedsmo stated before the game "We'll beat the Racers or you come free to see
the Stingers take on the Aeros." The promotion was that in the event of a Stingers
loss, anyone with a ticket stub would be admitted for free to the next game. Well Smo was
a man of his words and his Stingers went on to beat the Racers by a score of 6-0. There
were between one and two thousand Racers fans on hand to witness their team go down in
flames.

The Stingers defeated the Indianapolis Racers by a score of
6-0. Team captain Rick Dudley began the scoring frenzy with the first
goal of the game after a rebound. Making the call is Andy MacWilliams. |
The Stingers first of six goals
came at 6:04 by team captain Rick Dudley. The goal was scored when Dennis Abgrall
skated in on the right side and triggered a shot from the top of the circle. The puck was
blocked by Racers goalie Michel Dion. But when the Racers goalkeeper fell on the
rebounding puck it slipped free and Rick Dudley blasted it into the net. The Stingers
proceeded into the period with many scoring chances but failed to capitalize. In one
instance the Stingers had a five-on-three advantage but came up shy.
In the second period Rich Dudley stood
all alone in front of the net and took a shot. But his shot missed the net. Moments later
Dennis Sobchuk took a pass from rookie Jamie Hislop after he swiped the puck in the Racers
zone. Sobby proceeded to bat the puck into the net for the score. The Racers picked up two
power plays but failed to score due to the fabulous defense of the Killer Bees. The
Stingers however came right back and scored at 13:19 in the period. The goal came from the
stick of Blaine Stoughton when his teammate Greg Carroll carried the puck into the Racers
zone and passed to Blaine Stoughton. Stoughton fire a pretty angled wrist shot into the
net for the score. Cincinnati went on to score their fourth goal of the period when Dennis
Abgrall took a pass from Rich Leduc. Abgrall then skated right in front where he
backhanded the puck into the net.
After the fourth Stinger goal, Racers
head coach Jacques Demers yanked goalie Michel Dion for new acquisition and former
Stingers Paul Hoganson. Hoganson was traded to the Racers three days prior for
"future considerations". Hoganson managed to shut out his former team for the
remainder of the second period. But more then three minutes into the third period, the
Stingers put goal number five on the board. The goal came from Dennis Sobchuk right after
he left the penalty box for spearing, when he took a pass from Billy Steele. Sobchuk then
batted the puck in from right on top of Hoganson. The goal would be his 33rd of the
season. Cincinnati picked up the sixth and final goal of the game when Rich Leduc scored
on a rebound of a shot from Abgrall. The goal would be his 41st of the year. |
