Cincinnati's OT woes continued as they dropped another game in overtime.
Cincinnati played well enough to win the gamebut yet again simply fell short of
taking it home.
Cincinnati began the period skating
well and scored the first goal of the game. The goal came from Dennis Sobchuk at 5:23 in
the first period. The goal came when Billy Steele, who had now been playing on a regular
shift in addition to his penalty killing duties, held the puck in the Whalers end and then
blasted a shot right towards the Whalers net. Dennis Sobchuk then tapped it in for the
score. The Whalers followed with a goal at 7:41 by Dave Keon who beat LaPointe with a slap
shot from the head of the left circle during a power play. But the Stingers Blaine
Stoughton answered at 14:58 with his 31st goal of the season. Stoughton scored from right
in front of the Whalers net on a pass from rookie Greg Carroll off of the board.
The second period didn't go as well for
the Stingers despite landing a goal late in the period. The first two goals were Whalers
goals and both came from the Carlson brothers. Steve Carlson played Steve Hanson in the
hit movie Slap Shot. The first goal came from Steve Carlson after taking a nice
pass from Tom Earl. While the second goal came seconds later when Steve's brother Jack
found himself and the puck right in front of the Stingers net with no defensemen near.
Jack looked to the left and then looked to the right. When he saw no Stingers defensemen
in sight, he simply tapped the puck in the net while Stingers goalie Norm LaPointe was
scrambling back after playing the puck behind the goal. The Stingers came back and tied
the game up with a goal by Billy Steele. Steele took a pass from Dennis Sobchuk from the
right circle during a power play. Steel batted the puck past Abrahamsson for the score.
Neither team managed to score in the
third period despite a handful of opportunities. Both teams played sloppy with poor
passing and overall play. The Stingers excuse was they were just wiped out. Its anybodies
guess but the Whalers appeared to be the same. However, New England had just enough oomph
to take them over the top when the game was sent into overtime. At 4:43 in overtime Andre
Hinse of the Whalers knocked in the winning goal. The Stingers now had an overtime record
of 0-6-2.
Three of the four Whalers goals came
from Dave Keon, Jack Carlson and Steve Carlson. All three players were acquired from the
Minnesota Fighting Saints after the club ceased operations. |
