The Stingers Barry Legge was called for holding at 6:04 in the first
period and the Jets took full advantage. Winnipeg's Barry Long nabbed the puck after a
faceoff and beat LaPointe at the net for the score at 8:05. Cincinnati answered later in
the period at 17:01 during a power play of their own when Rich Leduc scored on a rebound.
It would be his 27th goal of the season. The Jets scored again at 17:44 by Lyle Moffat
after he knocked Stingers goalie Norm LaPointe out of the goal. But the goal was erased
when referee Alan Glaspell called Moffat for interference. As a result of the Stingers
pulled ahead by one goal after Rick Dudley deflected in the puck that was shot by Ron
Plumb. Despite the Stingers giving up one power play goal, the club did ward off the Jets
on other scoring opportunities.
The Jets laid the attack on thick in
the second period. And despite both clubs having the nine shots on goals Cincinnati
managed one goal while the Jets managed four. The first Jets goal came at 1:07 when Willy
Lindstrom took a pass from fellow Jet Dan Labraaten. Lindstrom then sneaked the puck in
the net past Norm LaPointe. Moments later the Jets Andres Hedberg took a pass from Ulf
Nilsson and then batted it in for the second goal of the period. Cincinnati answered at
9:35 when rookie Peter Marsh fired a shot from the right circle. But the Jets scored two
more times before the period ended. he first goal came from Veli Pekka Ketola during a
power play. Two minutes later fellow Jet Kent Ruhnke deflected in the second goal to put
the Jets lead at 5-3.
Cincinnati however came back in the
third period and tied up the game. The first goal of the period came when Jacques Locas
got the puck from right in front on a pass by John Hughes from behind the Jets net. The
game tying goal came from Dave Inkpen after he slammed a hard shot from the right point
into the net. Despite two scoring oppurtunies, the Stingers couldn't bag the game winning
goal and the game was sent into overtime.
The Stingers had not faired well in
overtime games thus far in the season and the overtime curse would continue. Anders
Hedberg of the Winnipeg Jets was the leading scorer of the WHA and he would knock in his
39th of the season at 3:47 in overtime. The game winning goal came when Stingers
defenseman Barry Legge was called for a hooking minor at 3:41. Hedberg took full advantage
and bagged the game winner sixteen seconds later. The loss would be the Stingers second in
a row which moved the club into third place in the Eastern Division. Cincinnati now had an
overtime record of 0-5-2.
