Off the ice, the Stingers had been rumored at the time to be in the works
with a deal to ship Pierre Guite out of Cincinnati. Rumors that turned out to be true.
Pierre Guite was shipped to the Quebec Nordiques for defenseman Pierre Roy.
The Stingers also called up goalie John
Kiely from the Oklahoma City Blazers of the Central Hockey League. Kiely had been in
training camp with the Stingers prior to the season but didn't make the club and was sent
down to the minors. Kiely was in the last year of a three year contract with the Stingers
and played in 22 games with the Stingers in the prior season. Despite being called up John
Kiely never played in another major league game after his stint the prior year.

The Stingers Peter Marsh and the Whalers Doug
Roberts chase after a loose puck. |
The Whalers Tommy Earl scored the
first goal of the night shortly after opening face off. But Cincinnati's Blaine Stoughton
answered within twenty seconds to tie it up. Jamie Hislop followed shortly after with a
goal at 3:39 and Rich Leduc scored at 4:05. Cincinnati was up by two goals in less then
five minutes of play.
The Stingers became laid back in the
second period and protected their two goal lead only because the Whalers seemed
disorganized and weren't moving the puck well. But after a quick third period goal by the
Whalers in less then a minute. The Whalers goal came from Danny Arndt after he picked up a
loose puck right in front and shot it in for the easy goal. The Whalers were now behind by
one goal. After some hollering by the Stingers bench boss Terry Slater, the club picked it
up and went on to score five straight goals.
Jamie Hislop started it off with his
second goal of the game at 6:56. It was only his fourth game with the Stingers. Richie
Leduc would also score his second of the game at 8:09 in the period. Peter Marsh then went
on to score the remaining three goals in the game for the hat-trick. His first coming at
12:21, his second coming at 17:03 and his final goal coming at 18:02. There was some
confusion in the press box as to who actually scored the final goal. Dennis Sobchuk fired
the shot from the left circle and Marsh just tipped the puck before it went in. The
officials would eventually award Marsh the goal but Marsh said after the game that
"the puck would have gone in anyway. I just ticked it with my stick. I couldn't
get the stick out of the way in time".
The victory would be the clubs third
straight win and would elevate the Stingers to second place within the Eastern Division. |
