The match-up between the Winnipeg Jets and the Cincinnati turned out to be
a shooting match. Fourteen goals were scored between both teams and the Stingers Peter
Marsh got the frenzy started at 7:27. After serving a two minute penalty for elbowing
Willy Lindstrom, Marsh scored after taking a pass from Dennis Sobchuk. Sobchuk fed the
puck to Marsh as he was standing right in front of the Jets net. The Jets answered at
13:35 after Ulf Nilsson picked up the puck after a bad pass from Cincinnati. He then
skated in two-on-two with fellow Jet Anders Hedberg. Nilsson then fed the puck to Anders
who scored from right in front of the Stingers net.

In the second period, the Jets
center Mat Lindh scored at 8:05 to put the Jets ahead. But the Stingers Rich Leduc
answered after a hard shot past the Jets goal Joe Daley at 10:25. Blaine Stoughton put the
Stingers ahead by a goal at 15:33 when he slipped the puck past Daley for the score. But
the Jets evened things up again at 19:37 when Lindstrom beat the Stingers goaltender Norm
LaPointe for the score.
In the final period of the game, the
Jets left winger Bob Guindon broke the tie at 3:18. He took a feed from teammate Perry
Miller as the Jets skated in with a man advantage and caught LaPointe off guard. But the
Stingers team captain Rick Dudley tied the game back up shortly after when Rich Leduc dug
the puck off the boards in the corner and slipped the puck to Dudley who was stationed at
the mouth of the goal. Billy Steele scored to put the Stingers ahead at 6:28 when he
gunned a shot from the right circle which caught the left goal post and bounced into the
net. Rich Leduc scored an unassisted goal to put the Stingers up by two. But the lead
would not last. Winnipeg scored four straight goals to take the victory. Two of the Jets
goals came from Willy Lindstrom who also scored a goal earlier in the game. His third goal
at 18:46 in the final period would complete the hat trick. Lindstrom only took three shots
on goal throughout the entire game. Each shot was a score.
Terry Slater was very concerned about
the goal tending during the game. But was reluctant to pull LaPointe for Caron, who had no
pregame workout. "I've never been in a situation like that before. As long as I've
been coaching I've never had a goal tender go cold late in a game like that. If he had let
in three bad goals early I would have pulled him right away. But you can't pull the goalie
with only five minutes left." |
