In the first period of play, the Stingers had a few good scoring
opportunities but were unable to capitalize on them. On one occasion Cincinnati had a
power play after Lagace was called for tripping but couldn't get anything going. It was
the Bulls who drew first blood at 9:15 in the period. The goal came from Peter
Marrin on a three-on-two break. When teammate Lou Nistico's shot was blocked, Marrin
batted in the rebound.

The Bulls scored again in the
second period when the Stingers goalie Jacques Caron made a mistake while trying to clear
the puck from behind the goal and finding himself trapped. When he tried to move the puck
to another Stinger he became tangled in a pile of players and was nowhere near the net..
The Bulls center Gord Gallant took the puck and passed it to teammate John Stewart who
tapped it in unmolested. The Bulls added another goal to take a 3-0 lead when Lou Nistico
came up with a loose puck near the red line and swooped in on a breakaway. He then batted
the puck n with a nice wrist shot from in front.
During the period the Stingers
repeatedly found themselves one man short when going into their own end as the defense
failed to cover and the forwards didn't come back.. Cincinnati also failed to score during
a power play. The Bulls goaltender John Garret kept denying every shot Cincinnati took.
In the third period the Stingers
finally woke up after a Rick Dudley goal at 3:11 in the period. With the Bulls Tim Sheehy
out for hooking, Dudley nailed a hard and low shot from the far left circle which caught
Garrett off guard. Blaine Stoughton scored the second Stingers goal at 6:46 when he
checked the puck off of the Bulls Ray McKay from a weird angle and into the net.
Cincinnati's Claude Larose scored the game tying goal at 13:31 when Stingers rookie Greg
Carroll skated into the Bulls zone with the puck and then fed it to Larose. Larose was
stationed perfectly in front of the Bulls net and tapped it past Garrett for the score.
Cincinnati proceeded to take the lead at 17:47 in the period when defenseman Ron Plumb
took a hard shot from the right circle which caught the left pipe and ricocheted past
Garret for the score. But with only twenty seconds left in the period, the Bulls Mark
Napier scored on a highly questionable goal that sent the game into overtime. An overtime
which ended in a tie. |
