The Stingers were the first to get on the board when Dennis Abgrall beat
Cowboys Gary Bromley for the score. The goal came when team captain Rick Dudley batted the
puck at the Cowboys net. Bromley blocked the shot but Abgrall was there to knock in the
rebound. Cincinnati lost Pierre Roy and Rick Dudley to the penalty box but the Stingers
did a fabulous job at killing penalty minutes which resulted in zero goals for the
Cowboys.
The second period saw the Stingers play
much like they did in the opening period. That was forcing the play which resulted in
another Cincinnati goal. The goal was scored by rookie Greg Carroll when he blasted the
puck into the net after his own rebound. The next five minutes of play had a lot of
shooting between both teams and a lot of furious end-to-end hockey. Calgary regrettably
managed to bag a goal during that time. The shot came after Ron Chipperfield skated
through the Stingers defense and skated in on the Stingers goalie Norme LaPointe. Calgary
tied the game up at 16:46 in the period on a disputed goal. Calgary's rookie left winger
Bruce Greig brought the puck into Cincinnati's end but was tripped from behind. Although a
Stinger defenseman remained between Greig and the goalie, the referee Ron Ego called for a
penalty shot. Grieg then went on to knock the puck past LaPointe with a backhand shot to
tie things up.
In the third period the Cowboys Paul
Terbenche gave the Cowboys the lead when the Stingers failed to clear the puck in
their own zone. Terbenche nabbed the puck inside the blue line and launched a low shot
into the Stingers net. Moments later Cincinnati tied the game back up after Dennis Abgrall
scored. The goal during a power play with Butch Deadmarsh out for holding. Stinger Barry
Legge blasted a shot that hit the post and Abgrall snared the puck and hit it past
Calgary's goalie for the score. But Deadmarsh later would make up for it when he scored at
15:31 in the period. The Cowboys scored yet again at when Don Tannahill beat
LaPointe for the score. It would be the last goal of the game.
The Stingers concluded the three game
western swing with a 2-1 mark. The record kept the club in second place within their
division.
