In the first period Dennis Abgrall scored the first goal. His goal came on
a deflection which bounced past Winnipeg's goalie Joe Daley. During the second period
neither team did much. However the Jets had a great oppurtunity to tie the game up but
blew it. The Stingers had an open net that was a sure Winnipeg goal. Stingers goalie
Jacques Caron came out to poke check the puck as it was being passed in front of the goal.
Jets center Mats Lindh kept it and turned for a shot. By a miracle Lindh's shot hit the
goal post and landed in front where Stingers defenseman Ron Plumb jumped on the puck and
knocked it safely away.

In the third period Cincinnati's
offense picked up. Rookie Jamie Hislop scored at 1:37 in the period with a back handed
shot. Team captain Rick Dudley added two more goals before the game was concluded. His
first goal came after a pass from Abgrall. Dudley then hit the puck with a backhanded flip
into the net. Dudleys second goal came in the final seconds of the game when he pegged a
deflection of a Ron Plumb shot. The goal sealed the victory and gave Dudley his 9th goal
in the last four games.
During the final period Stingers goalie
Jacques Caron made some fabulous saves. One in particular was when the Jets had two
skaters break away for the Stingers goal untouched. Caron stayed with the skaters and came
out and challenged them which made them pass. When Jets Ron Ward nabbed the puck to try
and score, he was in too close. Caron proceeded to swipe the puck with his glove to end
the threat. Caron was later hit in the forehead after a hard shot was taken by the Jets.
The injury resulted in three stitches.
Jacques Caron was credited with the
keeping the defending Avco Cup Champions scoreless. It would be his second straight
shutout. The shutout gave Caron a share of the WHA record for consecutive scoreless games.
The record is shared by his teammate Norm LaPointe. |
