Terry Slater claimed that the loss to the San Diego Mariners was the
"worst game we've played all year" and few could argue. The first period was all
Norm Ferguson of the Mariners. Ferguson scored all three goals of the period and completed
the hat-trick in sixteen minutes. The Stingers and Mariners both had fourteen shots on
goals but Cincinnati failed to score any points. Not that they didn't have good chances to
score.

Stingers Blaine Stoughton tripped over the
leg of Mariners Joe Noris. |
During the period Jacques Locas
took off on a break away and then hit a hard shot at the Mariners goal. Only to have it
blocked by the Mariners goalie Lockett. Peter Marsh had at least two shots that
should have gone in but missed the barely missed the net. Dudley stated that "If we
had used a gun I don't think we could have put one in". Terry Slater pulled Paul
Hoganson for Norm LaPointe after the first period fiasco.
In the second period, the Mariners
tacked one more goal on the board after center Bob Dobek drilled one past Norm LaPointe.
The goal came during a Mariners power play after Stingers Ron Plumb was called for
tripping.
The third period was barely any better.
The Mariners Tony Cassolato scored at 8:35 while his teammate scored on a backhanded shot
at 16:02. But in between the scores, Ron Plumb put one in the net to end Locketts bid for
a shut out. It would be Ron Plumbs third goal in three straight games. Plumb was leading
the league for a defenseman in scoring with 25 points.
The Stingers loss put the club in third
place within the Eastern Division. It would be the clubs second loss at home.
