The Houston Aeros began the game with six hard shots on goals, which
resulted in zeros on the score board. The Stingers goaltender Norm LaPointe blocked
everyone of them which set the tempo for the rest of the game. When Cincinnati finally
managed to take their first shot at the Aeros net, it resulted in an unassisted goal by
Jacques Locas.
During the second period, the Stingers
came out shooting and jumping out to a commanding lead of 4-0 before the Aeros could score
a goal of their own. The first Stingers goal came from defensman Ron Plumb who scored at
2:02 in the period. The second goal of the period came from Richie Leduc at 5:29. Leduc
hit the puck on a rebound, but did it as the whistle was blown. The goal counted but under
much protest by the Aeros bench. The Stingers tacked another goal on the board when
Billy Steele and teammate Richie Leduc skated towards the Aeros goalie Grahame with a bit
of give-and-go. Steele then batted in the puck for the score. Houston scored their first
of the game at 8:02 during a power play. Cam Connor slapped the puck right up the middle
for the score. The Aeros Marty Howe scored a follow up goal just before the period ended.
In the third period, the Stingers put
three more goals on the board to close the book on the Aeros. The first score came from
Dennis Sobchuk at 8:59. The second goal came from Peter Marsh at 10:45 and the third goal
came from the stick of Dennis Sobchuk yet again. He scored at 14:50.
Slater was happy with the victory. He
stated that "As long as everyone skates, we're going to do well like we did in this
game. We had a couple of lapses but overall we skated well". Slater also credits the
past two wins to the fact that he shifted some of the lines around. He took Richie Leduc
and surrounded him with Peter Marsh and Dennis Abgrall. Leduc began the season on the LSD
line with Blaine Stoughton and Rick Dudley. When asked how Leduc felt about the change he
remarked "The change had to be made. The team was playing flat and something had to
be done. I saw it as a challange. Its completely different than playing with Dudley and
Stoughton."
