The Cincinnati Stingers came out of
the gate during the first period and totally controlled the game. Blaine Stoughton scored
at 5:11 and Jacques Locas followed a minute later after a sweet pass from teammate Rick
Dudley. Cincinnati outshot Calgary 15-5.

puck that was deflected by Cowboys goalie Don McLeod. |
In the Calgary locker room after
the period, the Cowboys head coach Joe Crozier (who also coached the Cincinnati
Swords), held his players up to try and motivate them. He held them up so long that he
drew a delay of game penalty, but the tactic worked because the Cowboys began to play
harder.
Calgary scored a goal in less then two
minutes of play in the period. The goal came from the stick of Lynn Powis. But the
Stingers Dennis Abgrall answered at 7:42. The Cowboys scored again when left winger Peter
Driscoll batted the puck past Stingers goalie Paul Hoganson. However, Stingers team
captain Rick Dudley connected for his thirteenth of the season at 10:48 .
The final goal of the middle period
came after Stingers goaltender Paul Hoganson fell to his knees and put his glove over the
puck on a shot by Chris Evans. Calgary's Rick Jodzio skated in, dug his stick underneath
Hogansons glove, pulled it out and then the puck slowly slid between Hogansons pads into
the net. Hoganson had not held the puck for three seconds so there was no whistle.
In the final period of the game Ron
Plumb scored his first goal of the season after a hard shot from outside the right circle.
But Calgary refused to go away and scored late in the third period. The goal came from
Danny Lawson who scored his 200th career WHA goal. Dennis Abgrall scored seconds later in
what would be the final goal of the game.
Despite the victory, Terry Slater was
not overly excited about the Stingers play in the game."We're starting to score again
and that's a good sigh. But we went into lapses a couple of times".. |
