Prior to the game, the Stingers Director of Player Personnel confirmed
that the club was working on a deal to move Stingers defenseman Bryan Maxwell. Maxwell was
acquired by Cincinnati as a free agent during the preseason but broke his collar bone
during an exhibition game against the Nordiques. Maxwell had missed a lot of the regular
season and had not rebounded the way the Stingers had hoped. "I don't think they gave
me a chance. I don't like leaving but I hope it all works out for the best" Maxwell
would say. Maxwells roster spot was taken up by Ted Long, who was called up from the
Hampton Gulls.

The New England Whalers goaltender Cap Raeder misses
a shot taken by Blaine Stoughton at 16:06 in the first period. |
Neither the Stingers or Whalers
were all that impressive in the early going of the game. The Whalers Gordie Roberts
finally broke up the monotony with a goal at 14:32 in the period. Cincinnati's Blaine
Stoughton tied the game up with a goal at 16:06 after some nice skating, to fool Whalers
goalie Cap Raeder for the score. But New England answered in the final minute of the
period with a goal by Danny Bolduc.
Fifty seconds after the opening face
off in the second period, the Whalers Mike Rogers would score during a power play. The
Whalers would score yet again at 6:53 in the period when Gary Swain batted the puck past
Stingers goalie Paul Hoganson. Swains shot came from right in front of the Stingers net.
Cincinnati's Dennis Sobchuk scored only moments later when he tapped in a shot from in
front of the crease after taking a pass from teammate Peter Marsh.
In the third period, Cincinnati scored
two straight goals to tie the game up. The first goal came from Claude Larose after he
slapped a shot past Raeder. The second shot came from Dennis Sobchuk when his shot came
from directly in front of the Whalers net after Raeder mishandled the puck. But the
Whalers left winger Dan Bolduc scored to take the Whalers lead back. The play came after
recently called up Ted Long tried to bat down the puck but wound up giving it to Bolduc.
The Stingers began to press which resulted in rookie Greg Carroll being sent to the
penalty box for cross checking. The penalty sealed the deal for the Whalers after they
scored the final goal of the game during the power play. It would be the Stingers sixth
loss in a row.
In reference to the penalty that
Carroll had drawn, head coach Terry Slater would say after the game "You have to look
at the clock and think. The old veterans don't go after somebody in a situation like
that." |
