The Cincinnati Stingers again were unable to win on the road when they
fell to the Calgary Cowboys by a score of 6-3. The Cowboys came out and took a commanding
lead after scoring five unanswered goals in the first period.
The first goal came in less then two
minutes of the period by right winger Dick Sentes with a backhanded shot that beat
Stingers goalie Norm LaPointe. The second goal came from the stick of Rick Jodzio on a
rebound of a shot taken by teammate Don Tannahill. The Cowboys center Ron Chipperfield
made it 3-0 as Calgary broke into the Stingers zone with a three-on-two advantage. George
Morrison made in 4-0 at 14:20 due to the fact that Cincinnati was unable to keep the puck
out of their zone. Morrison scored right in front of the net after getting a rebound of
his own shot that was blocked by LaPointe. Cincinnati had a power play opportunity after
Peter Driscoll was sent to the penalty box for roughing. But the club was unable to make
anything happen. But the Cowboys scored their fifth goal of the period shortly after a
Calgary power play had ended. The shot came from Peter Driscoll who hit a rebound of a
Chris's Evans shot.
Stingers head coach Terry Slater
replaced Norm LaPointe with Paul Hoganson for the second period. Hoganson shutout the
Cowboys in the middle period while the Stingers managed to end the Cowboys bid for a game
shutout. Rookie Greg Carroll beat Calgary's goalie Don McLeod with a heavy slap shot from
the left circle at exactly 4:00. Shortly after the goal, McLeod left the game with an
injury after blocking a Stingers shot. His replacement was former Cincinnati
Sword Gary Bromley.
The took back their five goal lead with
a goal by Jim Mayer who scored from close in on Paul Hoganson. Shortly after, Stingers
Pierre Guite and Peter Driscoll got into a bit of a scrap which resulted in both being
sent off the ice for seven minutes. Cincinnati managed to make the score respectable after
two straight unassisted goals. One by Peter Marsh and the other by Dennis Sobchuk. Marshes
goal came during a power play at 12:16. While Sobchuks goal came after a short handed
breakaway goal at 16:31.
