The Stingers, who were still flat from a loss they suffered the previous
night, played about the same against the Oilers. It was yet again another road loss
suffered by the Stingers. The Oilers scored three goals to the Stingers zero in the first
and second periods.
In the first period, the Stingers came
out flat and remained that way throughout the first period. The Stingers couldn't catch a
break if it hit them in the face. Dennis Sobchuk missed a shot on a breakaway and Jacques
Locas took a hard slap shot from the slot that hit a post. Locas was called for
interference early in the period and the Oilers capitalized on the penalty by scoring a
goal. The shot came from Bill Flett who scored after a rebound right in front of the
Stingers net. Stingers goalie Paul Hoganson had failing to the ice after blocking the
initial shot taken by Glen Sather.
The second period was more of the same.
The club failed to skate and the Oilers simply took advantage of it. Edmonton lost Al
Hamilton to the penalty box after a tripping call. But the Stingers were unable to score
on the power play. The Oilers Rick Morris however had no problem scoring at 7:05 after he
received a pass from former Stinger Frank Beaton. Dave Inkpen and Dennis Sobchuk were both
sent to the penalty box for tripping which set up the third Oilers game in the game. Barry
Wilkins slapped a hard shot from the blue line and then Bob Nevin deflected the puck past
Hoganson. The Oilers outshot the Stingers 13 to 4 in the period.
Cincinnati did mount a comeback and
scored two goals in the third period with goals by Claude Larose and Dennis Sobchuk.
Larose cut loose with a long, screaming slap shot which cut right through the Oilers
goalie Ken Broderick. The second goal came after Bryan Maxwell cleared the puck to Jacques
Locas who then passed it to Dennis Sobchuk. Sobby then nailed a shot that sailed past
Broderick.
But the Oilers Glen Sather scored
another goal at 18:17 in the final period to seal the deal for Edmonton. Sathers goal came
from in front of the Stingers net after a pass from his teammate Bill Flett after two
Oilers broke down the ice in a two-on-one break.
Stingers head coach Terry Slater would
say after the game "I can't beleive guys who score 30-40 goals a year could miss the
net like that"? |
