| QUEBEC CITY
- The Cincinnati Stingers punctuated their World Hockey Association exhibition debut with
123 minutes of penalties in taking a 3-1 decision against the Quebec Nordiques, last
season's finalists. The fights began 46 seconds into the first period and continued
throughout. The riot culminated with the entire Stingers bench emptying into the crowd to
take on abusive fans. Million dollar center Dennis Sobchuk
scored all three of Cincinnati's goals, the last two assisted and short-handed. Ron Plumb
and Rick Dudley were given assists on the first. Quebec's Tom Serviss managed Quebec's
lone score late in the third period against rookie goalie Norm LaPointe. Veteran Serge
Aubry goaltender for the Stingers the first 30 minutes and shut out his former teammates.
Two major fights erupted in the first two periods. In the first,
Cincinnati's Rick Dudley dueled with an unidentified opponent and drew a five minute
penalty. Later, the Stingers' Frank Beaton got into it with Quebec's Gord Gallant and both
benches emptied before the fracas was settled. Beaton and Gallant were both sent to the
showers with game misconducts. The Stingers charge into the crowd occurred midway through
the third period. A stick fight between Bernis McNeil (sic) and Rick Jordon further marred
the last stanza. |
