Cincinnati and New England squared off for the first time ever and it
wasn't a pretty one for the Stingers. The New England Whalers put up three goals in the
first period. One goal came at 9:57 in the game when right winger Tom Webster bagged an
unassisted goal. The second Whalers goal came at 11:36 when defensmen Tommy Abrahamsson
scored off an assist by Webster. The third goal came 15:12 when center Wayne Carleton took
trhee straight shots on the Stingers net. He took one shot, got the rebound, took another
shot, got the rebound and then he took a third shot which went in the net.
Cincinnati finally answered the first
period onslaught when Stingers Bernie MacNeil hit one in the Whalers goal, marking his
sixth goal on the season. MacNeil hit a slap shot from the slot 15 seconds before the
period retired, breaking up a shutout of the period..
The Stingers came out agreesive in the
second period and scored in just twenty eight seconds. Andrascik put one in the Whalers
net with assistance by Dennis Sobchuk. O'Donohough but another goal in the net for
Cincinnati, which tied the score up. But the Whalers answered when Tommy Abrahamsson
bagged another for New England to put them back in front.
The third period was all New England.
Center Rosaire Paiement scored 25 seconds into the third period. Carelton scored his
second goal of the game at 1:35. While Tommy Abrahamsson scored his third goal of the game
at 2:12 to complete the hat-trick.. It would be the Swedes first of his professional
career. Tommy normally is a defensemen but was part of a shake up of lines by Whalers head
coach Jack Kelly. The final goal of the game came from left winger Danny Arndt at 17:01.
Despite the Stingers out shooting the
Whalers 39 to 33, Cincinnati skated away with the second worst defeat in the teams short
history. After the game Terry Slater told reporters that "We can beat the Whalers. It
was close and then bam, they score four third period goals." Slater continued "I
have to fight against overlooking San Diego and looking ahead to that Sunday game. I hated
losing to New England and I wany to see how we play them this time when we'll be
stronger"
