Backstrom Balks |

| When the
Denver Spurs became the Ottawa Civics Friday, they may have lost veteran Ralph Backstrom.
Cincinnati Stingers' coach Terry Slater, for at least one, is interested in acquiring
Backstrom. "I have an escape clause in my contract and as of right now I am a free
agent," Backstrom said after the Stingers' defeated the Civics (nee Spurs), 2-1 in a
World Hockey Association contest Friday night. "I really don't know what I'll do. But
I will do nothing until I talk with my wife. My attorney has received contacts from at
least two teams." added Backstrom, an 18-year pro veteran and former Montreal
Canadien. Slater said: "I'd love to have him on my hockey
team. I like Ralph Backstrom. He's a helluva team guy and I think some day he'll make a
helluva coach. He began in the Montreal organization and that organization produces
winners." Slater said he would first have to talk with Stinger executives about
acquiring Backstrom. Jean-Guy Talbot, the Civics coach, left hurriedly after the game. He
refused comment about the Backstrom case. |

The
Mariners came to Cincinnati with three All Stars in Andre LaCroix, Gene Peacosh and Kevin
Morrison. The team had won six of their last eight games and after three minutes of play
against the Stingers, it looked as if it would be their seventh win in nine games. In just
the first three minutes of play, San Diego netted three goals. Stingers goal tender Paul
Hoganson had only allowed four goals in five games prior to the Mariners attack. What made
it that much more humiliating was all three goals came from each of the first San Diego
shots in the game. The first goal came when Paul Hoganson fell and Mariners Gene Peacosh
sat on top of him. As a result, the Stingers net was wide open for Mariners Norm Ferguson
to knock in a goal. The second goal came from Gary Breedin who moved into 10th in the
league for scoring with 13 goals. The third Mariners goal came at 2:56 by Kevin Devine.
Despite the quick lead the Mariners, Cincinnati did not
give up. Cincinnati began in what became a rally at 4:49 in the second period. Jacques
Locas backhanded a 10 foot shot past the Mariners goal tender Russ Gillow. John Hughes was
in on the assist. Cincinnati followed up with a goal at 16:28 by Rick Dudley. It would be
Rick Dudleys 20th goal of the season.
For the third period the Mariners benched goal tender
Gillow and replaced him with Ernie Wakely. A decision that the Mariners would come to
regret. Especially seeing as how Gillow was playing well despite the two Stingers goal.
The Stingers proceeded to tie the game up 39 seconds into the third period when Murray
Myers skated across the front of the net and knocked in the puck after a pass from
teammate Bryan Campbell. It would be Campbell's 30th assist of the season. Claude Larose
scored a follow up goal at 2:58 when he beat everyone down the left wing on the breakaway.
He then slapped the puck past Wakely and into the net from just a few feet out. Dennis
Sobchuk bagged another Stingers goal at 11:05 in the period. Sobby took a great pass from
teammate Pat Donnelly who fought off two Mariners defensmen behind the net in order to get
control of the puck.
The victory was the Stingers third in a row which
matches a season best. The victory put the Stingers within two points of the division
leading New England Whalers . |
