Cincinnati
entered the Houston Summit with what appeared to be an advantage. Aeros seasoned veteran
Gordie Howe was suspended for two games for shoving an official. However, the advantage
helped very little as Gordies sons Marty and Mark pick up the slack for their Pop.
Dennis Sobchuk scored the games first goal with a wrist
shot from 20 feet back at 3:39 in the first period. The goal would be his 10th of the
season. Bryan Campbell and Murray Myers assisted Sobby. John Hughes was called on a
tripping penalty moments after the goal, which put the Stingers down by a man. But goal
tender John Kiely, who was starting his fifth straight game, made some nice saves as
Cincinnati killed penalty time. Despite the Stingers French Collection making some nice
hard shots on the Aeros, Cincinnati was unable to add to their lead. Houston's Marty Howe
retaliated and made a shot from the left point and scored at 6:54. The goal would be his
fourth of the season. While Dudley was serving a penalty late in the first period, the
Aeros managed to score another goal at 17:48. Houston's Andre Hinse tipped in a shot by
Mark Howe. Moments later the Stingers answered when Bryan Campbell blasted in a shot from
inside the blue line after Aeros goal tender Ron Grahame came out to stop the play.
Cincinnati kept constant pressure on the Aeros goal tender deep in the first period.
Dennis Sobchuk was the Aeros main pest firing four shots on goal. Stingers John Hughes
blocked a shot by Aeros Rich Preston 16 minutes in the period, while Kiely made great
saves during the Dudley penalty.
During the second period Mark Howe scored a shorthanded
goal at 9:48 which broke the tie.Terry Ruskowski was in the penalty box for roughing but
Howe and Preston had a two-on-one rush towards the Stingers goal. Preston took the first
shot but missed. Howe took the rebound and flipped it in the Stingers goal for his eighth
of the season. Cincinnati tied the game up again at 12:03 as Pierre Guite controlled
the puck, skated from left to right and set up Larose in the slot. Kiely continued to stop
the Houston attact by blocking close range shots by Larry Lund and Frank Hughes.
In the third period Houston's Andre Hinse put the Aeros
ahead again with a goal at 5:26. But the Stingers Pierre Guite answered five minutes later
with a Cincinnati goal to tie it back up. Mark Howe put in his second goal of the game at
15:36 which broke the tie yet again and put Houston ahead for good. The Aeros center Terry
Ruskowski added an insurance goal later in the period when he made a long shot past the
glove of Kiely.
Despite the Stingers loss, the club retained first
place in their respective division.
