After the Stingers loss to the Indianapolis Racers
on December 4th, Terry Slater decided to implement a new rule to his players that anyone
who commits a "stupid penalty" will be finded $150. The rule thus far has worked
well over the last couple games. And had helped the Stingers win two in a row to maintain
first place within the Eastern Division.
The Stingers Dennis Sobchuk scored the first goal of
the game with help from teammates Locas and Campbell. Sobchuk controlled the puck long
enough for a fourth forward to be inserted which later helped him slap in a rebound from
beyond the side of the cage. Sobchuk was able to maneuver this after the puck bounced off
of the Crusaders goal tender Gerry Cheevers' own stick. Cheever was later replaced by
goalie Bob Whidden because of a bruised hand. The Stingers French Collection bagged the
second Stingers goal at 18:52. Claude Larose scored was the one who put it in the net
scoring his 16th on the year. While Guite and Locas were in on the assist.
Bryan Campbell put the Stingers up by 3 when he netted
a goal at 5:07 in the second period despite being shorthanded. Campbell slid the puck up
the ice and made a hard shot from the blue line, hitting the goal post. The puck flew off
into the corner with Campbell chasing after it. He shot again from a hard angle which put
the puck in the net. Pelyk and MacNeil were in on the assists.
Stingers goal tender John Kiely carried a shutout into
the third period. But after Crusaders right winger Gerry Pinder made a perfect pass to his
teammate Gary Jarrett, who then put the puck in the Stingers net at 6:09, the shut out was
over. The Stingers however managed to hang on to their cozy lead and went on to win the
match up. Slater would say after the game that the Stingers goal tending had improved.
"Everyone is back playing their position because they know they can trust the goal
tending now. John's a hell of a goalie".
