Clash At Denver Tonight. Stingers, Spurs To Horse Around

-

-

DENVER - The Cincinnati Stingers, clinging to a one point lead in the World Hockey Association's East Division, play the financially troubled Denver Spurs here Tuesday night. There have been rumors aplenty about the Spurs lately, ranging from "they won't last past the New Year" to " somebody else is going to duty them."

Owner Ivan (Ike) Mullenix insists he's committed for the season, but admits he needs help. "I'm willing to sell some, a lot or all of the club, Mullenix said. As part of a "Save the Spurs" drive, community leaders have been forming committees by the bushel to try to come up with a plan to get more fans into McNicols Arena, Denver's new facility that seats about 16,000 for hockey. But so far, at least, no investors seem willing to join Mullenix in footing the bills.

The Spurs have been averaging 3,000 attendance per game by generous estimates. One of the first suggestions put forth by an advisory committee will be implemented Tuesday night when the Spurs cut their ticket prices. All this talk has had an unsettling effect on the players, many of whom went through much the same thing last season at Chicago.

"Lets face it," said Spurs Coach Jean-Gut Talbot. "The players have feelings. They read the papers. It has to affect them some. It's got to hurt. But we've been playing better lately in spite of it. We've got Gary (MacGreger) back in the lineup and his line (with Ralph Backstrom and Don Borgeson on the wings) has been doing the job for us." That line has accounted for 40 of the 89 goals Denver has scored in posting a 10-16-1 record, worst in the West Division.

This will be the third Stinger-Spur meeting with each team winning once on home ice. The Spurs will go with Bob Johnson in goal. "Johnson let in two bad goals early in our last game," Talbot said, "He knows they were bad goals. It put us in a hole and we weren't able to catch up (Phoenix won, 4-1, Saturday night). "But I told him I'm sticking with him. I have confidence in him." Talbot has little choice. Cam Newton isn't expecting to be available for another week or two. He broke two fingers on his stick hand. The Spurs have added goalie Chris Grigg from Syracuse for emergency duty, but he is untested.

The Spurs have been tough on the road (5-6), but easy at home (5-10-1). "I wish we hadn't started at home," Talbot laments. "We were trying too hard because we wanted so badly to get people in Denver interested in coming out. Then we went on the road and the players proved to me they can play. Now we're starting to win at home, too." This will be the fourth stop on the Stingers' current five-game trip. They play Thursday at San Diego and return home for a Saturday game with New England.

Fresh off of a stop in Las Vegas, the Stingers enter the McNichols Arena in the midst of rumors surrounding the immediate future of the Denver Spurs. The franchise is in serious trouble and may not survive past New Years. The Spurs owner Ike Mullenix insists that he is committed to completing the full hockey season but fully admits that his franchise needs help badly. Denver community leaders began a "Save the Spurs" campaign to try and get people out to support the club. The Spurs arena seats 16,000, but the hockey club only draws an average of 3,000 fans a game. The Spurs players were almost not paid their mid-month salary prior to game time. Had it not been for a friendly local bank who loaned the club enough money to meet payroll. The game may not have been played.

The first period did not see much real action. The Stingers had 8 shots on goal to the Spurs 6. Four minutes into the period, Dudley almost scored but was denied by Spurs goal tender Bob Johnson. Dudley took a pass from Bryan Campbell and broke in alone. The effort came up empty. Eleven minutes into the period Pierre Guite took a shot after pulling the trigger on a three-on-one break. But the French Canadian also came up empty handed. Despite more missed opportunities, Cincinnati finally broke the scoring silence after Claude Larose slapped one by Johnson from about 25 feet. It was Laroses 18th goal of the season. Locas and Guite were in on the assist.

The Spurs also had their share of missed opportunities. Cincinnati's goal tender John Kiely made some fabulous saves from good shots taken from Spurs Don Borgeson and Ralph Backstrom. Late in the period a wild Denver shot hit the boards behind the net and bounced over Kiely's head. The puck landed at his feet, but Denver had no players in position to take advantage, so Kiely was able to knock away what could have been a sure Denver goal.

The Stingers totally controlled the second period, but Spurs goalie Bob Johnson kept denying Cincinnati. Johnson received little support from his teammates who seemed preoccupied with the off ice situation of their club. Cincinnati's Rick Dudley scored the Stingers second goal after batting in a rebound from an earlier shot taken by Brian Campbell. The goal came at 16:15 and put the Stingers up by 2. The goal was Dudley's 12th of the season.

With the exception of the Spurs goal tender Bob Johnson, Denver was playing with absolutely no passion. The game seemed like a lock for the Stingers. However, the Spurs Head Coach Jean-Guy Talbot decided to keep his players in the locker room between periods longer then usual to try and stir them to greater intensity. It worked.

Denver came out hard in the third period and tied up the game. Rick Morris scored the first Spurs goal at 8:39 and Backstrom followed at 13:51. Morris skated around the Stingers net untouched and jammed the puck between Kiely's pads and the goal post. Backstrom scored on a breakaway lead pass from teammate Jim Sherrif. Cincinnati was unable to respond and the game went into overtime. In overtime, the Spurs Barry Legge scored the game winning goal at 5:25. The winning goal came on a power play after Stingers Dave Inkpen was sent to the penalty box for holding.

Despite the loss, Cincinnati still maintained first place in the Eastern Division.
